Super Mario 64
Posted by 2Three
One of the best Nintendo games ever made. Actually, it’s easily one of the best videogames in general. If you owned a Nintendo 64, then you were very familiar with Super Mario. In fact, if you’re a gamer in general, you’re well aware of this game, even if you never had an N64.
Mario 64 redefined the way we looked at and played videogames. It offered revolutionary graphics, sound and game play mechanics. Who could forget when you first fired this one up and saw Mario’s face on the title screen? The visuals were just so amazing for the time, and still hold up quite well today.
For many gamers, Mario 64 alone was worth the price of admission to the Nintendo 64. While the N64 had a variety of great games, this one always remained a favorite amongst gamers, even though it was the main launch title for the console. Generally, launch titles lead the way into the new generation and subsequent games released should be able to surpass them easily. That didn’t happen with Mario 64.
There was so much to do in this game. Collecting all 120 stars was a feat in itself, but the game was filled with secrets and plenty of neat distractions to master. And this game could be loads of fun even if you weren’t really doing much of anything. You could spend an endless amount of time in given area just jumping around, doing back flips and exploring. Mario 64 was great fun, and no other game of its kind on the N64 was able to match it. Few titles in general have been able to come close to the greatness of this game. Even Mario Sunshine on the Gamecube couldn’t really cut it in comparison.
You could experience tons of remarkable and memorable gaming moments here as well. Like the first time you jumped through one of the pictures in the castle, or the first time you faced and defeated the gigantic Bowser. And nothing can compare to the first few hours that you spent messing around with this game. I bet that like me, you spent plenty of time roaming around outside of the castle before you even walked through the doors to start your quest. It was just so cool to be able to explore the castle grounds and try all kind of new acrobatics that Mario was never able to do before in 2D. And with Mario 64, Nintendo led the way into the modern gaming world, just as they paved the road for other gaming companies when they released the first Super Mario Bros. on the NES.
It’s definitely worth another look by old school N64 gamers. It’s also available on the Nintendo DS and for download via the Wii, so there are plenty of avenues for gamers to be able to experience and enjoy this game again, or for the first time.
