Sonic 1
Posted by 2Three
The game that put Sega and the Genesis on the map. This was an era when everyone was used to playing games like Mario Bros. and Zelda in 8-bit. Then suddenly Sega unleashed their powerful 16-bit Genesis system that offered flashy graphics and focused on speed, speed, speed.
The first time I tried Sonic the Hedgehog, I was blown away. The graphics seemed insane at the time and the speed was mind boggling. How slow did other platformers seem after playing Sonic?
The game was an instant hit and immediately placed Sega as a strong contender in the home console marketplace. It also began a bitter rivalry between Sega and Nintendo that would last for years to come.
The success of Sonic the Hedgehog led to numerous sequels along with merchandise such as toys, comics, and even a syndicated cartoon. Sonic was a household name and became synonymous with the gaming world.
In modern gaming times, Sonic has seen better days. Sega of course is no longer in the console market and only produces software. And modern Sonic games just don’t have the same appeal anymore. Why won’t Sega make a 2D Sonic game again? Imagine an old school Sonic game with modern graphics. Instant crowd pleaser. Not every game needs to be in 3D, and sometimes the tried and true format of the good old days would suit gamers just fine.
For anyone that does not have a Sega Genesis collecting dust in their basement and needs a Sonic fix, if you have a GameCube or Wii, you should definitely pick up the Sonic Mega Collection.
The Sonic Mega Collection includes:
- Sonic 1
- Sonic 2
- Sonic 3
- Sonic & Knuckles
- Sonic 3D Blast (not so good)
- Sonic Spinball (also not so good)
- Dr. Ronotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
The following games can be unlocked as well:
- Blue Sphere
- Knuckles in Sonic 2
- Sonic 3 & Knuckles
- Flicky
- Ristar
Quite the bargain and a definite must-have for any old school Sega / Sonic fans out there.
